LIVING ARCHITECTURE HABITATS

Ian McDonald and Lisa Lee Benjamin
June-July, 2012
San Francisco Art Institute

Lead teacher Ian McDonald and environmental consultant, Lisa Lee Benjamin, taught the “Living Architecture Habitats” course at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) in the summer of 2012 to create a sculptural green roof at SFAI. Students worked with local companies such as Flora Grubb Nursery and Hydro Tech to investigate the benefits of a living structure within the architectural environment.

Students were taught to consider issues including native species identification, beneficial insect habitats, and environmental design, in order to investigate how environmental design and sculpture interface as a way to add dynamic possibilities to practical issues.
